For those who are familiar with fitting Air Suspension, the managment system can easily become a maze of wiring/airline. Caused sometimes by a lack of space, or other times a lack of planning, we decided to figure out a solution.
We designed a flat metal plate, with a carefully considered set of slots/pin holes to mount all kinds of management kits. Utilising these cutouts, the plate keeps your wiring/airlines completely seperate; keeping the setup easy to adjust if ever needed. The mounting slots for the tank and compressor/s allow position adjustment, to dial in the perfect settings for your mangment combination. Furthermore, the design of the plate has been thought out with aesthetics in mind. As seen in the imagery found in this article, the Managment Cradle can also be used for display purposes.
Mainly aiming our product development towards the aircooled community, we designed a series of brackets as an extension of our Universal Design, which bolt in directly to a range of Volkswagens (view the range below).

Seamless Tanks for Air Suspension – what best suits your build?
Tanks suitable across all platforms and build requirements by MOA
Tanks are a key requirement for onboard air storage, whether this is for air suspension or for off road applications. Capacity and sizing of tanks goes hand in hand. This is where MOA have manufactured a full range of seamless tanks. Varying from 1 gallon all the way through to 5 gallon to ensure you are never without air supply.
All MOA seamless tanks are manufactured from spun aluminium. This creates that “seamless” sleek design where no bulky welded end caps are visible; giving your build a simplistic yet modern aesthetic.
The full range of seamless tanks conform with the industry standard 1/4″ NPT and 3/8″ NPT imperial flow-formed ports to ensure the cross compatibility with components and fittings from on-board air and suspension manufacturers such as Viair, Accuair and Airlift. Available in Raw spun aluminium finish and Powdercoated black. The full range have a pressure rating up to 200PSI, suitable for any pneumatic vehicle installation.
Deciding on what capacity seamless tank you need
With the full range of tanks varying from 1 gallon to 5 gallon. There is endless capabilities to what systems they are suitable for. Smaller on board air supply kits (usually for off road purposes/instant tire inflation) would typically use a tank with between 1 gallon and 2 gallon capacity. This gives ample instant pressure to inflate a tyre at roadside or for switching tire pressures between terrains.
The larger capacity seamless tanks by MOA are perfect for air suspension applications. Sizes 3 gallon through to 5 gallon give plenty of capacity to lift/drop your vehicle when required. An MOA 4 gallon seamless tank would get you roughly around 2 full lift/drop cycles of your vehicle before the need to refill. If you require additional capacity for your air supply, the tanks can connect in circuit to instantly double the amount of air storage.
Deciding on what size seamless tank you need
The sizing of MOA’s seamless tanks was an in-depth thought process. Given the all changing trends within the modified car world and increasing demand for weekend/converted camper vans. Sometimes finding a tank to fit specific applications can be difficult.
Skinny Range (1 Gallon & 1.5 Gallon Seamless Tanks)
With this in mind, the 1 gallon & 1.5 gallon Skinny and Stubby range is now available. These sizes are perfect for vehicles where space is an issue. The Skinny tanks range are only 100mm in diameter and with hardwearing aluminium composition of these tanks allows them to fit under vehicles perfectly where space is a factor and no chance of rust when exposed to elements!
Stubby Range (1 Gallon & 1.5 Gallon Tanks)
The Stubby 1 gallon & 1.5 gallon tanks are 168mm in diameter and measure in at 200mm and 250mm respectively. The narrow width makes these tanks suitable for mounting in wheel wells, under rock ‘n’ roll beds or even in unused cupboard space. With the design of the brackets, it also makes ease of installation as they can be mounted vertically in confined spaces. Simply install the brackets in desired location and desired distance apart, then slip in the tank and clamp down to secure.
3, 4 & 5 Gallon Seamless Tanks
The larger dimensions of MOA seamless tanks (3, 4 & 5 gallon) are all supplied in 168mm diameter. These sizes are more suited to air ride applications, choosing the width to suit desired location of install. Our best seller is the seamless 4 gallon tank which is perfect across all air suspension applications and vehicles. The most common installation place for these tanks would be as part of a boot build, within a luggage area or under the bonnet/hood of air cooled vehicles.
Limebug Revolution Air Ride - Automatic Gearbox Will it work with an Auto Trans?
In short, yes. “The Revolution” cantilever air ride kit will not be as straight forward to install as it is on the conventional swing axle or IRS transmission chassis however. It will require some adaptation to clearance and relocation certain fixtures of the kit to retain rigidity.
The images below demonstrate some adaptations used to allow the kit to be fitted to a T34 Razor Edge IRS chassis with a fully automatic 3 speed gearbox where the frame horns have been removed.
If you are running a T1 Beetle or T14 Karmann Ghia the layout may vary slightly but this will hopefully give the idea of what work may be required to correctly and safely mount the cantilever air ride kit.
Limebug Cantilever on Auto Trans
Re-enforcement mounts added to the Auto Bell Housing to retain the cradle upright. You cannot see from this image but the original support bar that would attach to the frame horn has been flipped and mounting to the torsion bar tube.
Limebug Revolution Air Ride Kit on Auto Trans
Re-enforcement bracket also added to the opposing side of the bellhousing for extra support. Adapted and mounted to the cantilever main cradle. There is still ample clearance for the starter motor also.

Across the Pond in New York, Vincent has built one hell of a Type 1. Keeping it classy, this Ruby Red Beetle runs OE Smoothies, White Walls, alongside all of the original chrome parts. Against the opinion of many purists, Vincent decided his super clean ’60 needed dramatic modification. He came to us, choosing to fit his ride with our Deluxe Air Suspension Kit. Maximising lows and driveability, the kit has completely transformed his chassis!
As of recent years, Vincent has upgraded to some of our latest parts. Swapping out his Gen I Rear Air System to a Cantilever Kit, plus an upgrade to our Management Cradle, to help manage his air install. Finallising the super-unique styling on his Bug, Vincent has strapped a Turbo Kit/Intercooler to the back. Taking up so much space, the car has to drive without a decklid; unconventional, but certainly very cool. Furthermore, a stinger pipe was added – As if the giant Turbo System wasn’t enough…
If you’re an OG follower of Limebug, you may recognise this ’67. Arriving to us as a bare shell, this bug was a completely blank canvas, which ofcourse in true Limebug fashion, changed quickly. Originally used as a Drag Car by the well known engine builder Stefan Rossi, the aesthetics of this Bug were certainly about to dramatically change.
Costing just £1500 at the time (what a steal!), the ’67 was in pretty good condition. Bodywork wise, little to no work was needed to be done – Allowing us to focus the majority of our time on the Suspension setup. Being the early days of our suspension development, the Type 1’s chassis was the base for a lot of different designs over the years. Upon completion, the car was running a 4″ Narrowed Air Beam, with our Gen I bolt-on rear air kit. Included were plenty of other goodies, such as an Early Managment Cradle and Titan Through Rods. To complete the car’s new lease of life, we had the interior and exterior fully resprayed. To contrast the Reed Green exterior, we had the floorpan painted in Burgundy Red (which also matched the red leather seats!). Once the shell was reunited with it’s chassis, Craig chose a set of Detailed Titanios to tie it all together.
During the years of our ownership, we took the Reed Green Beetle all over Europe – including it’s debut at Spa, plus many more UK Events.
How It's Going
Since we sold the car back in 2017, it has recieved some srious work to take it to the next level. The most noticable part changed over by the guys at BiffsDetailing was the wheels. Maintaining the #limebugequipped theme, we built up our very own SM35 Split Rims. A classic style rim which allows for centre caps to be added, kept the look of the car classy, whilst preserving it’s OE charm. The other major change the new owners made was to the front luggage space. Keeping the Air Cradle that we originally developed to display the management, Biffs had the area completely retrimmed, to match the style f the interior.
It’s great to see that the ’67 Reed Green is still being shown off years after ownership. Still maintaining little reminders of it’s past, its a true memory jig seeing the car at the occasional show. Nowadays, the car is owned by Dale, a close friend of Limebug. We’re excited to be helping develop further custom parts for the Bug – Keep your eyes peeled for pictures!
Oozing with class and style, Dickies Razor has rapidly gained popularity in the UK Aircooled scene. Originally being shown off at the prestigious Volksworld Show in 2021, many showed their appreciation of the build, labelling it ‘the coolest razor i’ve ever seen in my life’. Dickie followed on from this great reception to getting the car featured on the cover of Hayburner Magazine – A sought after achievement for sure…
So you may be wondering, what are the details? When it came into his hands, Dickie’s Razor was nicknamed ‘The Rusty Razor’. Once the shell had been removed, Tony sent this chassis (with engine and gearbox attached) over to ourselves. To begin the work, we tackled the suspension setup. Wanting to increase the sleekness of the Razor’s lines, we added our Full Deluxe Air Suspension Kit. Featuring our most popular parts such as the MOA430 and Cantilever Kit, this system was a must-have on the build. Now sitting as low as possible, we moved onto managment. Choosing to mount his system in the passenger foot well, we provided Tony with a Universal Mangement Cradle. This Cradle can be mounted on any flat surface, and keeps you Tank/Compressor/Manifold neat and tidy. To ensure the system was fast and easy to use, we fitted Dual 44c Compressors, and Airlift 3P. This ensured quick tank refill times, with PSI accurate adjustment.
Moving on from the Suspension, much improvement was needed in other areas of the vehicles driveability. Wanting to cruise his Razor around London and visit the occasional Car Show, Dickie cut no corners in his everlasting parts list. Starting with the gearbox, we provided and fitted a Freeway Flyer long ratio box, to help with economy at higher speeds. Paired with a light refurb accross the major engine components, reliability was certain to better than it’s predecessor. To complete the build on our end, we fitted a Full Willwood Brake System to the car. Not only did this help improve the feable standard stopping times, but it also added another great feature; to a build so deeply focused on the smaller details. Now complete with 16″ Fuch and a full Spikes’ body refurb, Dickie’s Razor will continue to look excellent for years to come.
How to get extra low on the IRS Revolution Cantilever Kit! Additional lowering modifications on IRS Models with the “Revolution” Cantilever rear air ride kit fitted, achievable through the following guide:
(Disclaimer: This guide shows these modificational work carried out to a Type 3 platform vehicle, with a stock Swing Axle subframe and IRS brackets welded in allowing for the install of later IRS Swing Arms. Modifications may vary model to model slightly so please take guidance when looking to carry out any of this work. Wheel/Tyre combination are also factors which may restrict the amount of drop you will achieve. For any further queries please contact us – Limebug Limited are not liable for any damages to vehicle/injuries to personnel carried out whilst following this guide. Always use a competent mechanic/fabricator when modifying your vehicle for your safety and that of others.)
STEP 1 – Modified subframe horns to allow lowered spring plates to gain maximum travel.
This involves removing the outer skin of the pressing and replating using heavy gauge steel.
As you can see in the picture the outer skin has been removed and moved back. This allows the spring plate to move up and down without fouling the original outer pressing.
Dotted line in Image 1 below represents the original pressing
STEP 2 – Alternative position for the Cantilever pull down bar/drop links assembly.
To allow the airbags to fully compress and stop the drop links from binding on the main cradle. The fixing point is offset for the bolt to the outside of the cradle housing.
A stainless steel sleeve was machined to act as a spacer between the housing and for the bolt to locate through.
The bolt length needs to be increased to 100mm. We always recommend using 12.9 tensile rated bolts.
By moving the fixing point outside of the cradle housing it allows more free movement and stops the drop link binding against the main cradle. see pictures.
The overall length of the pull down bar/drop link rod is to be reduced to 100mm and will need to be re tapped. We can supply these shorter rods and any other components if required.
These modifications should allow the IRS installation to compress fully and allow the car to sit lower. (Please note that by reducing the pull down bar/drop link length does in turn reduce the overall lift that the kit provides as standard)
Proceeding with the aforementioned modifications will give plenty of ground clearance when lifted for functional use.
If you have any other questions or queries surround the above modifications or any of our air ride kits including the Cantilever rear kit, please feel free to get in touch.
(Rob’s lovely Notchback shown in this example has raised floor pans, modified subframe, low profile tyres, custom wheels. and other minor modifications to allow it completely lay frame.)
Aluminium oil pump. The pump is fitted with larger 30mm gears and designed for use with 71-> 4 rivet camshafts. The pump is supplied with gaskets. For 1.3 and 1.6 based Aircooled engines and Waterboxer engines.
Note:
When using on Waterboxer engines you will need to clearance the oil pump cover plate to fit the rear engine cradle.
Adjust-a-Raise Adjustable Gearbox / Trans Raise, Stock to 1″
Classic Aircooled VW Mounts parts by Limebug
Traditionally raising the transmission is carried out to prevent high camber which causes premature wear of both rear wheel bearings and gearbox fulcrum plates. These high running angles reduce the transmission oil flow to the gearbox side of the axle starving the wheel bearings of lubrication. Typically the fulcrum plates will begin knocking due to continuous movement as the axle rotates.
When lifting or raising the transmission the amount of camber will decrease, this will reduce stress on all the fore mentioned components, an additional benefit of this is reducing tyre wear and increasing tyre-road contact.
When should I raise my gearbox, and by how much?
Depending on the style of vehicle different degree of raise may be required, typically tyre size and ride height are the primary driving factors, the larger the overall rolling radius, usually the higher the raise we would recommend.
Our transmission cradle is totally unique in its design encompassing the ability to run at stock height, 0.5” raise and 1” raise in one product.
Using the system is simple, requiring only a jack, 13mm spanner’s and the main Cradle bolt (usually 27mm), no access is required to the bell housing once first installed.
Our new design consists of high resonance bushes which provide fantastic absorption of transmission noise and vibration, ensuring the drive of the vehicle to feel just as good as using OEM mounts even with the transmission raised.
The mount also utilises special polymer bush which will not de-laminate against metal as it is mechanically fixed to the chassis rather than relying on glue to hold the engine in place. The bushes are also oil/fuel resistant increasing the longevity of your product.
Compatible with: Type 1 Beetle / Type 14 Karmann Ghia and Type 3 models 1950-79 and T2 Split Screen models (All Years).
Why Change from the standard Gearbox Mounts?
Listed below some of the most common Stock Gearbox / Trans Mount flaws:
Delaminating Bushes – Usually a knock when changing gear can be felt or applying or releasing the throttle, this is most commonly attributed to the glue/ rubber coming away from the metal of the rear gearbox mount.
Mis-aligned Frame Horns – Often causing cross-threading of the main Gearbox Bolts, nearly all chassis frame horns are slightly mis-aligned.
Prematurely worn Fulcrums on extremely low vehicles. This is caused driving with high rear wheel camber angles.
Solid mount solutions can cause heavy transmission noise and vibration.
Reduced ground clearance when lowering the vehicle, causing damage to the undercarriage.
Please note: Some clearance modifications may be needed when raising 1″, 0.5″ requires minimal adjustments. We find typically the tailpipe tips may just need bending down slightly to clear the valance if in the OE position.
