BUILT TO BE NOTICED

A 1954 Oval Window Beetle from IRVS VW Restorations, a distinctive collection of period details and Limebug Titan Wilwood brakes at all four corners. From the workshop in Cumbria to the VolksWorld Top 20 and the Meguiar’s stand at the NEC, this is a classic Volkswagen with a story worth looking at closely.

Some cars reward a second look.

An early Oval Window Beetle will always attract attention.

There is something beautifully balanced about Volkswagen’s mid-fifties bodywork: the smaller rear window, elegant wings and simple chrome detailing give the car a character that later models never quite replicated.

But occasionally, an Oval turns up with something a little unexpected.

Something that makes you stop, walk around it and take another look.

IRVS VW Restorations’ 1954 Beetle is one of those cars.

Built by the Cumbria-based Volkswagen specialists, it combines the familiar shape of an early Beetle with a series of carefully chosen modifications, including triple-chromed opening side windows and Limebug Titan Wilwood braking at both ends.

Its quality has also been recognised well beyond the workshop.

The car earned a place in the VolksWorld Top 20 before later appearing on the Meguiar’s stand at the NEC Classic Motor Show.

Not a bad journey for a seventy-year-old Volkswagen.

An Oval with a little more going on

IRVS VW Restorations

Based in Barrow-in-Furness, IRVS VW Restorations specialises in classic Volkswagen work.

On a car as old as this 1954 Oval, attention to detail is essential. Early Volkswagens have plenty of model-specific features, and a successful custom build needs to balance those original proportions with whatever changes are being introduced.

That’s especially true when modifications are visible from almost every angle.

Rather than overwhelming the Oval’s familiar appearance, this build draws attention to the details.

One of the most unusual is its opening side-window arrangement.

Triple chrome and fresh air

The Beetle features triple-chromed Safari-style opening side windows.

They’re the sort of feature that immediately changes how you look at the car.

On a conventional Beetle, the side glass is a relatively simple part of the body design.

Here, the additional chrome frames and opening mechanism become a visual feature of their own.

They complement the original brightwork while giving the vehicle something distinctly individual.

And there is an obvious practical appeal to opening side glass on a classic Volkswagen, particularly when the car is being enjoyed during the warmer months.

It feels period-inspired without being something you’d expect to find on every restored Oval.

Modern brakes behind a classic shape

Titan Wilwood front and rear

The most significant Limebug contribution sits behind the wheels.

IRVS’ Oval uses our 5×205 Titan Wilwood four-piston disc brake conversions at both the front and rear.

That detail is worth emphasising.

This isn’t simply a front-disc conversion paired with conventional rear drums.

The car carries modern four-piston braking hardware at all four corners while retaining the wide-five wheel mounting pattern associated with early Volkswagens.

The objective is to bring more contemporary braking capability to a much older platform without abandoning its traditional wheel-fitment identity.

Why 5×205 matters

For an early Beetle, the original wide-five pattern is one of the defining mechanical details.

It’s also a useful part of the vehicle’s visual character.

Choosing a 5×205 brake package allows the builder to retain compatible wide-five wheel options rather than changing the entire appearance of the car around a modern bolt pattern.

That makes the Titan arrangement particularly relevant to early Volkswagen builds.

The brakes aren’t there simply to look impressive.

They’re a functional upgrade selected to suit the wider vehicle.

From Cumbria to VolksWorld

A place in the Top 20

Taking a finished custom Beetle to VolksWorld is a significant milestone for any specialist builder.

The show brings together exceptional air-cooled Volkswagens, including carefully preserved originals, full restorations and extensively modified vehicles.

IRVS’ 1954 Oval earned recognition in the VolksWorld Top 20.

That achievement reflects the quality of the finished vehicle as a complete build rather than one particular component.

The engineering, presentation and individual details had come together into something worthy of recognition among a highly competitive field.

The Meguiar’s stand at the NEC

The car subsequently appeared on the Meguiar’s stand at the NEC Classic Motor Show.

It’s another impressive setting for an early Volkswagen.

Unlike a dedicated air-cooled event, the NEC brings together vehicles from a vast range of manufacturers, periods and restoration disciplines.

For a specialist Volkswagen build to be displayed in that environment says plenty about its wider appeal.

The Oval wasn’t simply attracting interest from people who already knew their Beetles.

It was being presented to a much broader classic-car audience.

Getting the combination right

It’s easy to concentrate on the larger modifications when looking at a custom Volkswagen.

The suspension.

The wheels.

The brakes.

But the best builds are usually remembered for the way everything works together.

With IRVS’ Oval, the early body shape remains unmistakable.

The opening chrome side windows add an unusual period-inspired detail.

And the comprehensive Wilwood braking package brings a more modern mechanical specification underneath.

None of those elements needs to dominate the car.

They contribute to a finished Volkswagen that has its own identity.

And with recognition at both VolksWorld and the NEC, it’s clearly a combination that has made an impression.

A little different. A lot of detail.

There are plenty of ways to build an early Beetle.

You can preserve every factory detail, restore it to concours condition or use the original body as a foundation for something thoroughly unconventional.

IRVS’ 1954 Oval finds its place somewhere between those approaches.

It retains the elegance that makes early Volkswagens so appealing, but introduces distinctive features and a braking system designed for a very different driving experience from the one Volkswagen offered in 1954.

The result is an Oval that’s worth studying rather than simply admiring from a distance.

And its journey from Cumbria to the VolksWorld Top 20 and the Meguiar’s stand shows just how effective that combination has been.

A familiar shape. Some unexpected details. And a build that earned its place in the spotlight.
