T2 1968-1979 Bay Window Rear Air Ride Kit, Bolt on

Classic Aircooled VW Rear Air Ride Kits parts by Limebug

For many years now, there hasn’t been a Rear Bolt-On solution for Air Suspension for the Bay Window platform. To complete an Air Installation, owners have had to weld on Brackets to the rear axles, eliminating any chance of restoring their Bus back to standard.

Using original fixings from the Volkswagen Chassis, we now offer a completely Bolt-On Air Suspension Kit utilising independent Rear Air Bags, which fix into the Rear Shock Mounts. With a completely new innovative design, the Kit drives great, and provides effective lift/drop and also means that modifications are no longer required.

The system is suitable for all chassis produced 1968-1979, and does not require engine or gearbox to be removed when installing. It is recommended to also fit our “Horseshoe Plates” to ensure that you receive the optimum lift/drop that the kit can offer.

No chassis modifications
No modifications required to fit to your chassis, unlike previous iterations on the market.

Seamless install
Getting installation time right down, no engine out and no gearbox out.

Fits all years
Suitable for Bay Windows through 1968-1979.

Lower lifting pressures
Using our meticulously designed brackets combined with MOA B20 Bags, ensures that the vehicle will lift with lower pressures to ensure a smooth operation and ride.

Higher lift rating
Using MOA B20 bags, the kit is capable of lifting your Bay Window whether it is a panel van or fully-kitted camper! Each rear air bag is rated to over 1100KG of lift capability.

Simple servicing and winter storage
Inverted bags mean water residue sitting and purging is a ten second job, put a jack under the car. Pop the air line off just leaning underneath, the bag drains with and moisture, its that simple.

Optional Extras:

Horseshoe Plates (Recommended)
The horseshoe plates lower the rear end by approximately 3.5″, which is extremely beneficial when opting for an air ride system with no chassis notches/modifications. All hardware for installation included. The Horseshoe plates retain the factory geometry and suspension travel just 3.5″ lower.

Air Ride Spring Plates
We do offer the air ride spring plates for both Early and Late Bay Windows, these allow greater lift/drop capabilities over stock style spring plates and will also allow for more adjustment to correct any toe/alignment issues often found with stock spring plates. These utilise stock style spring plate bushes.

GS460 Gas Charged Shock Absorbers, Pair
MOA GS460 Gas-Charged Shock absorber with a minimum compressed length of 295mm, through to 460mm at their maximum expansion. Ultimate High Performance gas charged shock absorbers, providing both rapid rebound, reduced roll, yet with soft damping specifically for lowered aircooled VW models.

OS560 Oil Filled Shock Absorbers, Pair
MOA OS560 Oil filled Shock absorber with a minimum compressed length of 345mm, through to 560mm at their maximum expansion. Ultimate High Quality Oil Filled shock absorbers, providing a softer OEM feel dampening.

Additional Information

Gaining extra lows
If your vehicle has chassis notches or you are looking to notch the chassis, you will gain extra lows with this kit as the axles will allow for more travel.

Important Operational Info: Must Read!
When operating your air ride kit, you must understand that you now have total free range to move the suspension to its mechanical upper and lower limits. The air bags used are strong enough to lift the weight of almost two VW Beetles per bag. In order to maintain, be sure never to exceed the mechanical limits of your vehicle.

Be sure to inspect the vehicle with the wheels off and run the car through the travel noting the upper limit PSI. With the rear air kit, be aware of your steel and rubber bump stops, once you hit these the kit has nowhere to go and you will only apply more stress to the kit, the first sign you will get is a twist in your lower brackets, if you continue to apply pressure after this point you will cause more damage to surrounding areas.

Have a friend monitor the height of the rear of your car when you do initial setup. When setting your ride heights do so applying pressure then drive the vehicle around approx 10-20 metres to allow the axles to re-settle then tweak and repeat until satisfied. When Jacking the vehicle up always place the vehicle onto ramps or a jack, then let all the air out of the four corners to avoid an over pressurization situation when lifting the vehicle, then lift the vehicle off the ground afterwards.

If ever leaving your vehicle with a garage or MOT centre unfamiliar with air suspension, make them aware of the upper limits and inspect before and after picking the vehicle up to check for damage. Always operate between 90-95% of the upper range NEVER 100%. As a general guide line rear kits rear their upper limits at approx 100PSI. If you exceed these limits you WILL cause long lasting damage to the air ride kit brackets / trailing arms / shocks / Hardware.

If you drive the vehicle excessively low you will cause damage to your front axle / beam trailing arms along with the frame head. Always lift the car up to a suitable drive height and maintain air and mechanical joints and unions.

One final note if you put in a really high pressure and rear the mechanical limits be aware you will be damaging the vehicle even for a very short burst. Be careful and considerate to your air kit and you will enjoy many, many miles of hassle free driving fun.If you are in any doubt and have a kit or considering purchase of a system and need more information, call us on 01782 922047 or email on: vwparts@limebug.com
