The Design:

Towards the end of 2023, one of our customers Wallace, came to us wanting to take his Beetle to the next level. Already having our Deluxe Air Suspension and Wilwood Brake Kit installed, it was time to change out his OE Steelies. Striving for a completely unique look, Wallace set us with the task of creating a one off set of Splits, incorperating elements from multiple existing wheel designs, plus some extra Limebug trickery.

The brief for this wheel was a smoothie-style shape, with extra cutouts, similar to those of a Starmag, to show off the Brake Kit fitted to the car. We initially started with the 5 trapezoid cutouts surrounding the centre bore; after a chat with Wallace we further decided to add extra small cutouts inbetween, to spice-up the spoke design. With the base design for the faces made, it was time for the difficult part of the process – Billet Hub Caps. After requesting special shaping and personalisation on the caps, we knew that a reworked OE Cap wouldn’t cut it. Due to their large taper, each cap took 2 hours of milling (never mind the extra engraving and shaping!).

Next job on the list was the finish. Wallace chose a subtle Gloss Black Powdercoat for his centres, and Polished Hardware to match his fresh Lips and Hub Caps. Using info we learnt from previous builds, we chose to spec a staggered setup, with 5J in the front, and 8J in the rear. Requesting a 5th wheel/spare, we built Wallace a 3rd front wheel.
