What is this part called?
Mechanical Inline Oil Thermostat, 80°C
What does this part do on a VW?
This inline oil thermostat is used in full-flow oil systems to regulate the temperature and flow of engine oil, particularly when an external oil cooler is fitted. When the engine is cold, the thermostat restricts flow to the external cooler and redirects most of the oil back into the engine, helping it reach operating temperature more quickly. Once the oil reaches approximately 80°C (180°F), the thermostat opens and allows full flow through the external oil cooler, preventing overheating during extended driving or high-load conditions. This helps protect oil coolers and filters from excessive pressure when oil is cold and improves overall engine longevity.
