What, Why, How do you recon an Aircooled VW T1, T2, 002, 091 Gearbox

Limebug is among one of the few companies to offer a re-conditioning service for all Aircooled VW gearboxes.

Why?

There is a number of reasons customers look to re-con a box, most commonly is to keep up with modern traffic; this is achieved by converting the ring and pinion. The ring (or crown) and pinion, is the most desirable of all the conversions as it draws out all the gears by a percentage, rather than just one gear.

The other commonplace for sending a gearbox for recon is to strengthen common weak points, this can be such things as converting from brass to steel selector forks, welded gear sets, machining and re-sleeving, uprated clutch forks, and Chromoly gears.

The final reason is to repair a fault within the box, whether it be popping out of gear, or will not engage at all, routine service etc.

    Suitable for Engine Sizes typically from 1600cc up on most models, when installed in a Bay Window or T25 1700-1900cc up, please consider the additional weight of large camper conversions such as Dormobile, Danbury, Westfalia.

    Will convert your box to:
    • T1 Gearbox 3.88 R&P, 0.89 4th Gear
    • 002, 091 Gearbox57 R&P, 0.89 4th Gear

 

  • Super Flyer: The perfect all rounder,

    Suitable for Engine Sizes typically from 1776cc up on most models (Will require a full flow cooling system for oil system, for more info on this get in touch), when installed in a Bay Window or T25 2000cc up, please consider the additional weight of large camper conversions such as Dormobile, Danbury, Westfalia.

    Will convert your box to:
    • T1 Gearbox 3.88 R&P, 0.82 4th Gear
    • 002, 091 Gearbox57 R&P, 0.82 4th Gear

 

  • Ultra Flyer: The ultimate Long box,

    Suitable for Engine Sizes typically from 2027cc up on most models (Will require a full flow cooling system for oil system, for more info on this get in touch) also well suited to Subaru and Diesel conversions, when installed in a Bay Window or T25 2332cc up, please consider the additional weight of large camper conversions such as Dormobile, Danbury, Westfalia.

    Will convert your box to:
    • T1 Gearbox 3.44 R&P, 0.82 4th Gear
    • 002, 091 Gearbox57 R&P, 0.77 4th Gear



How?

Firstly we require your original gearbox, we can arrange this, or you can drop off the gearbox at our workshop during opening hours. Generally speaking we can organise a courier.

You will be require to remove the box and fully drain it of oil, wrap it up in something to catch any additional oil such as shrink wrap and box the gearbox up. Pay particular attention to protecting the shift fork as this can commonly be damaged in transit, we would recommend a piece of plastic pip over the top.

Payment on gearboxes is required upon competition. Please be aware once you have dropped of the gearbox and confirmed you require the work done, you are liable for the whole amount even if you change your mind. Once we begin the process of stripping a gearbox and installing components, they are not re-sellable hence the reason for this so please be sure you are happy with this prior to drop off.
